Galena's Centennial

The articles below are taken from the Galena Gazette Archives.  A special thank you to the Galena Gazette and Advertiser, Galena Public Library, and the Galena Foundation for their work and donations toward the digitization of Galena's historic newspapers.

On December 14, 1926, Galenians assembled at 120 Bench Street (need reference for which house this is today), the home of Florence Gratiot Bale to celebrate the Centennial and tell stories told by descendants of Galena's early pioneers.  The stories paint a vivid picture of early life - no roads, a fickle river, a large population of watchful Native Americans, and yet a steady stream that would become a torrent of prospectors and pioneers.

GALENA'S CENTENNIAL SOON

Galena Daily Gazette, 18 July 1925
"In the fall of 1926, Galena will have an opportunity to celebrate it’s one hundredth anniversary as an incorporated city, and the occasion should not be allowed to go by with out a magnificent celebration. Not many cities in the middle west have such a history as has Galena, for when Chicago was known as Fort Dearborn, Galena was the metropolis of the west, the frontier city toward which all eyes were turned, and although it was not geographically situated to become a large city, its history has gone out to all the world. There is not another city of its size in all the central west, that can boast of having been the home of as many distinguished men as can Galena, and in the hey-dey of its youth, it was one of the wealthiest cities in the entire state of Illinois. After the Chicago fire in 1871, it "was Galena men and Galena capital that was largely responsible for the rebuild ing of that city, and to-day some of the most successful men of Chicago are former Galenians. It is none too early to start making preparations for our city centennial. What have our enthusiastic boosters to say regarding this proposition? We should be pleased to publish any remarks tending to help along a rousing celebration"

LOCAL NOTES

Galena Daily Gazette, 28 August 1925
"The item in The Gazette recently regarding the Centennial anniversary celebration in Galena next year is traveling over the country in the press and is being given wide publicity, indicating much interest in the event in the surrounding country. As stated few cities can boast of a record similar to Galena’s, historically, commercially and otherwise and its centennial celebration could be based on facts taht would attract the attention of the world."

GALENA CENTENNIAL
CELEBRATION PLANS

Galena Daily Gazette, 25 September 1925
Attracts Attention of Many Former Residents.
"Galena's Centennial Celebration planned for early next Fall is attracting a great deal of favorable comment from former Galenians and also from people residing within a radius of 100 miles or more. They all think that Galena should make it the biggest event in it’s history. A Home-Coming celebration that will never be forgotten. Thousands of former Galenians will no doubt avail themselves of the opportunity to be present. It will doubtless be held the first week in September and will consume a whole weeks time. Plans are already being considered by the live wire citizens who feel that it is none too early to take the matter in hand and work up something really worth while. C. J. Burns of Escanaba, Mich., a former Galenian, says that it is a wonderful proposition and thinks Galena should bend every effort from now on to formulate and complete plans for a celebiation that will never be equaled. Mr. Burns said he would plan his vacation next year to be in Galena during that week and he knew that hundreds of other former Galena families would do likewise. Mr. Burns has promoted many important events at Escanaba and knows the pulling power of big celebrations."

LOCAL NOTES

Galena Daily Gazette, 29 October 1925
"Lester B. Colby, Director of Publicity of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, while in Galena the other day reminded Galena that it possesses an unusual historical facility for an unusual celebration. There are a number of towns in Illinois boasting of a centennial but rare indeed is the city that can boast of a Duo-Centennial."

LOCAL NOTES

Galena Daily Gazette, 28 December 1925
"The centennial anniversary celebration in Galena next year will be a big event. Galena became a village 1826 and a City in 1839. The celebration will be in honor of Galena becoming a village."

PLAN CENTENNIAL
CELEBRATION IN SEPT.

Galena Daily Gazette, 13 January 1926

"Galena boosters are already talking over plans for one of the biggest celebrations ever held in this city, the occasion being the Centennial anniversary of Galena’s becoming a village. It is planned to have the big event in the first part of September unless plans are changed for some good reason. It will be a Home Coming celebration and will last an entire week, according to preliminary plans. Anyone having any special ideas along this line is invited to make the same known through The Gazette."

TO NAME COMMITTEES
FOR CENTENIAL FETE

Galena Daily Gazette, 16 January 1926
"It has been suggested that all of the clubs of the city, the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis, and other orders interested in Civic affairs, appoint a committee from each order to assist in promoting one of the biggest celebrations ever held in Galena next Fall, the occasion being the Centennial Celebration of the village of Galena. These committees in turn hold a meeting and elect a chairman to take charge of all affairs. This is a Golden opportunity for Galena to have a real old time home coming celebration and make itself nationally known. The Centennial idea seems to have been a decidedly favorable impression with a great number of people. Now it’s up to everyone to BOOST and BOOST."
