About Galena 2026

On December 27, 1826, in a forgotten tavern on Main Street, people of the "Village on Fever River" voted to adopt the name "Galena," the lead ore that brought prosperity to the region.

Galena is celebrating her bicentennial with events throughout they year, punctuated by a corn boil and music festival in September, and capped off with a birthday party and drone show on December 27th.

All events will be free and open to the public.  Patrons will be encouraged to donate to our Bicentennial Legacy Project.  Our goal is to raise $250,000 for improvements to Recreation Park.

Bicentennial Legacy Project

Recreation Park
Growing up in Galena meant frequent trips to Recreation Park.  During the summer months, Field Street would be a stream of kids traveling to and from the public swimming pool.  Evenings were spent watching slow-pitch softball games and tournaments.  If you were bored, you would just drive to "Rec Park" to see who was around - after you "cut the gut" a time or two.
Galena's Bicentennial Legacy Project will be a new, state-of-the-art, multi-generational, all-inclusive, and all-weather playground near the northwest entrance.  This project will not only fit an immediate need, but will benefit future generations of Galenians.
