NY Bar Admits Ely Parker

On Friday, November 14, 2025, Ely Samuel Parker was posthumously granted admission to the New York Bar.  This comes 130 years after his death, and 160 years after he penned one of the most important legal documents in our nation's history: the terms of surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.

Parker had studied law, but was refused admission to the New York Bar.  As a Seneca, he was not considered a US citizen, a requirement for the bar.
