Bicentennial Kickoff!

December 27th saw us celebrate the beginning of our Bicentennial year with a mayoral proclamation and toast!
Music was provided by the Americana Band, cake and cupcakes from Tammy's Piggly Wiggly, champagne from the DeSoto House - and the first items were placed into our time capsules to be opened in 2076!
Items included: the latest Gazette, the mayoral proclamation, a poem by Ted Williams (recited at the event), and rolls of pennies! A sixth generation Galena student performed the ceremony of placing the items into the two time capsules, one to be placed in Recreation Park and one to be placed on the Galena School campus.
Hillary Holt gave a wonderful presentation about the Indigenous Peoples that inhabited the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans and later Americans. And the crowd loved it - proving that Galenians are starved to learn more about our history, and we plan to feed them all year long!
Next up: Galena Trivia at Turner Hall! Test you knowledge of Galena history, or sit in the audience and learn more about the town we cherish!
